Toubkal circuit trek landscape in the High Atlas, Morocco
In short: The Toubkal circuit trek is a 6–7 day loop from Imlil around Mount Toubkal, crossing passes such as Tizi n'Likemt and Tizi n'Ouanoums, visiting Lac d'Ifni and Amazigh villages, and ending with the 4,167 m summit when you are well acclimatised. It is best from late May to October.

The Toubkal circuit trek is the best way to see the High Atlas beyond the busy up-and-down route from Imlil. Over about six days you loop around the Toubkal massif, cross high passes above 3,500 m, sleep in remote Amazigh villages, camp near Lac d'Ifni and finish with the summit of North Africa's highest peak, already acclimatised. Here is how the circuit works, a typical itinerary and how to prepare.

What is the Toubkal circuit trek?

The Toubkal circuit trek is a multi-day loop of roughly 70–90 km around Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), usually starting and ending in Imlil. It links several valleys (Imnane, Tifnoute and the Mizane), crosses passes such as Tizi n'Likemt and Tizi n'Ouanoums, passes Lac d'Ifni and includes a summit attempt near the end. Most programmes last 6–7 days with 5–7 hours of walking per day.

Our 6-day Toubkal circle trek from Imlil via Lac d'Ifni and Amsouzart follows this logic, and the 7-day Toubkal and Azzaden valley trek adds a gentler finish through the Azzaden valley.

A typical 6-day Toubkal circuit itinerary

Exact stages vary with season, group and the agency's programme. This is a representative example, with approximate altitudes:

DayStageHighest pointWalking timeNight
1Marrakech – Imlil – Tizi n'Tamatert – Tacheddirt~2,280 m4–5 hVillage gîte
2Tacheddirt – Tizi n'Likemt – Azib Likemt~3,550 m6–7 hCamp or shepherd hamlet
3Azib Likemt – Tifnoute valley – Amsouzart~2,600 m5–6 hVillage gîte
4Amsouzart – Lac d'Ifni~2,300 m3–4 hCamp by the lake
5Lac d'Ifni – Tizi n'Ouanoums – Toubkal refuge~3,660 m6–7 hRefuge
6Toubkal summit – Imlil – Marrakech4,167 m8–10 h—

Some circuits run in the opposite direction or start with Tizi Mzik and the Azzaden valley. The direction above is popular because the summit comes last, when you are best acclimatised.

Why choose the circuit instead of a 2-day climb?

  • Acclimatisation: you cross two passes above 3,500 m before summit day, so the 4,167 m top feels much easier.
  • Fewer crowds: outside the Mizane valley you may walk for hours without meeting other groups.
  • Culture: nights in villages such as Tacheddirt and Amsouzart show daily Amazigh mountain life, from walnut harvests to irrigation channels.
  • Landscape variety: green terraces, bare high passes, juniper slopes and the deep blue of Lac d'Ifni.

If time is short, our summit day timeline explains what the classic 2-day ascent involves.

How hard is the Toubkal circuit?

The circuit is a moderate to strenuous trek. No climbing skills are needed in summer and autumn, but you walk several consecutive days with 800–1,200 m of ascent on the hardest stages and steep descents on loose ground. The day from Lac d'Ifni over Tizi n'Ouanoums is usually the toughest before the summit. Regular hikers who train for a few weeks generally manage well; see our 8-week Toubkal training plan.

How the logistics work

  1. Transfer: a driver takes you from Marrakech to Imlil (about 1.5 hours) on day one and back on the last day.
  2. Team: a licensed guide leads the group, with a muleteer and often a cook on camping nights.
  3. Luggage: mules carry your main bag; you walk with a daypack of 20–30 litres.
  4. Nights: a mix of village gîtes, simple camps and one night at the Toubkal refuge before the summit.
  5. Meals: breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner are usually included: tagines, couscous, salads, bread and mint tea.

When is the best season for the circuit?

PeriodConditions on the circuit
Late May – JuneGreen valleys, snow melting on high passes, long days
July – AugustHot in the valleys, pleasant above 2,500 m, storms possible in afternoons
September – OctoberStable weather, harvest season, cool nights
November – AprilSnow on passes; circuit often impractical without winter equipment

High passes such as Tizi n'Likemt can hold snow into late spring, so your guide may adapt the route.

What to pack for a 6-day loop

  • Broken-in trekking boots and comfortable camp shoes
  • Warm sleeping bag (comfort around 0 °C or lower for camp nights)
  • Layering system: base layer, fleece, insulated jacket, waterproof shell
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen
  • Water bottles and purification tablets or a filter
  • Small personal first-aid kit and any personal medication
  • Cash in dirhams for drinks and tips

Life in the villages along the circuit

One of the reasons trekkers choose the circuit is time spent in places that see far fewer visitors than Imlil. In the Imnane valley, Tacheddirt is one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in the area, with stone houses stacked on the slope and fields of barley, potatoes and walnut trees below. On the far side of the massif, the Tifnoute valley around Amsouzart feels more remote, with flat-roofed houses, threshing floors and irrigation channels (seguias) that have been maintained by village communities for generations.

Above the villages you pass azibs, the stone shepherd huts used in summer when families move goats and sheep to high pastures. Your guide will often stop for tea with families he knows, explain the weekly souk system and point out the plants used for herbal teas. Bring a few phrases in Tamazight or French, ask before taking photos of people and dress modestly in the villages: these small gestures are always appreciated.

What does the circuit cost and what is included?

The price of a guided Toubkal circuit depends on group size, season, the number of camping nights and whether transfers from Marrakech are included. Larger groups share the cost of the guide, cook and mules, so the price per person falls as the group grows. A good quote should list clearly: licensed guide, muleteer and mules, cook, all meals during the trek, gîte and refuge nights, camping equipment, and transfers. Drinks, tips and personal travel insurance are usually extra. Ask for the written programme before you book so that you can compare like for like.

About Lac d'Ifni and the Toubkal massif

Lac d'Ifni is a natural lake at about 2,300 m, formed behind a huge rockfall and surrounded by bare, steep slopes. It is one of the most photographed spots of the circuit. The whole massif lies within Toubkal National Park, created in 1942; general background is available on the Toubkal National Park page on Wikipedia.

Key takeaways

  • The Toubkal circuit is a 6–7 day loop from Imlil with the summit near the end.
  • Expect two or three passes above 3,500 m and 5–7 hours of walking per day.
  • Best from late May to October; snow can block passes in other months.
  • Mules, guide and cook make the logistics simple; you carry only a daypack.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Toubkal circuit trek?

Most Toubkal circuit programmes last 6 or 7 days and cover roughly 70–90 km, depending on the exact route and side trips. Daily stages are typically 5–7 hours of walking, with the summit day being longer at 8–10 hours because it combines the ascent from the refuge and the descent to Imlil.

Is the Toubkal circuit harder than the 2-day trek?

It is longer and requires more endurance, but many trekkers find the summit itself easier on the circuit because they are better acclimatised after crossing high passes. The 2-day trek concentrates a big altitude gain into a short time, which is harder for the body to adapt to.

Where do you sleep on the Toubkal circuit?

Nights usually alternate between simple village gîtes or guesthouses (for example in Tacheddirt or Amsouzart), camps run by the trekking team, and the Toubkal refuge on the night before the summit. Mattresses, meals and tents are generally provided; check whether a sleeping bag is included.

Can beginners do the Toubkal circuit?

Beginners with good general fitness can complete it if they prepare with regular hikes and stair training for several weeks. It is not technical in summer, but walking six days in a row at altitude is demanding. Choosing a slower pace and a well-supported trek with mules makes it accessible.
